Clean Your Carpet With Natural Household Items
We’ve all been there when you get a spillage on the carpet and haven’t got any carpet cleaner. Well the good news is, there are loads of kitchen items that can do the job just as well and they’re better for the environment too as they’re not full of nasty chemicals. Have a read through our suggestions and get yourself prepared for the inevitable spillage. You could even throw a party to test your new skills!
Vinegar
White vinegar is an amazing tool for cleaning the whole house. It has natural antibacterial properties and can kill salmonella and E.coli making it perfect for the kitchen as well as the bathroom and carpet. Buy a squirty bottle and fill it half with vinegar and half with water, then you’ll be prepared for any unexpected spillages and have got yourself an all-purpose cleaner.
When you have a spill on the carpet, first blot the liquid up with a paper towel being careful not to scrub as this will push the stain further into the carpet. After blotting spray the vinegar mixture onto the stain very liberally, really give it a good soaking and then leave it for 10 minutes to soak in. Then simply take a clean towel to blot up the stain or give it a scrub for a deeper clean.
Baking Soda
Baking soda is a real god-send for absorbing odours and is a great way to bring an old smelly carpet back to life. All you need to do is hoover the carpet to get up any loose dirt then scatter the baking powder across the carpet and leave it to sit for at least half an hour to work its magic. Or if you can, leave it there all night. Then once it’s had chance to work, hoover it up and hey presto, it smells like new. You can also use this same technique to refresh your rugs and soft furnishings.
Soda/Tonic Water
The bubbles in soda or tonic water work wonders when used to prevent stains, as long as you catch it when it’s wet. Simply pour it onto the red wine or coffee stain to disperse the spillage and then blot the area with a paper towel to absorb the liquid. After you’ve done this you can give it a final clean with some detergent or if you want to stay natural use the mixture of half vinegar half water.
Too Far Gone!
If you’ve not managed to get to your stains when they’re fresh or years have passed and there is a lot of accumulative dirt and stains, you might want to think about having the carpet deep cleaned.
